Los Angeles Coastal California Naturalist Training Courses

The courses are a collaboration between USC Sea GrantCalifornia Naturalist, and the LA Conservation Corps Sea Lab.

The courses bring together traditional and scientific knowledge about coastal regions to be used to foster effective interpretive programs. They are designed to provide interpreters in the field with a strong understanding of the natural history of California with an emphasis on coastal areas and watershed areas of the Los Angeles region.

The University of Southern California has participated in the National Sea Grant College Program for over 30 years and has more than a 100-year history of marine science research in Southern California. USC's facilities, research, and curricula make it the principal university in the Los Angeles region for ocean studies, and it has demonstrated excellence in marine research and education from the beginning of the 20th Century.

The SEA Lab site was originally founded in 1974 as the Edison Marine Research Laboratory to develop a state-of-the-art fish protection system that was used at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Twenty years later, Southern California Edison, together with Earth Island Institute, converted the site into a coastal science education center. LA Conservation Corps was selected to develop and manage the new SEA Lab as one of its programs.

Participants who complete all course requirements will be certified as California Naturalists through the UC California Naturalist Program, and will receive a certificate of completion and a pin. Credit is available from UC Davis Extension for an additional fee.

2022 Schedule: Thursdays, February 3rd - April 14th, from 3:30 - 5:30pm
