Welcome to our ongoing effort to catalog citizen science and other public participation in scientific research (PPSR) projects for UC California Naturalists and other citizen scientists. A vast majority of the information in the database was gathered from project websites and may be out of date. Project Purpose (taken from project materials)
Contribute to growing citizen-science datasets on the distribution of the plants and animals of the Pepperwood Preserve; Contribute to the Bay Area BioAtlas, which seeks to build reserve-level species guides of where these plants and animals persist and where they are absent, as a baseline for monitoring changes related related to land use and climate change.

Participant Activities
Participants record, share and verify observations to track species and promote exploration of the natural world. Users can also access an illustrated biodiversity atlas of species for their area and have experts within the community review and verify uncertain observations

Volunteer Qualifications
Please bring hiking gear, iPhone or SmartPhone and/or digital camera, GPS and water.
Suitable for ages 12 and up.

Volunteer Training
Video training on the use of iNaturalist is available.
Expeditions provide education relating to the Preserve and guidance on use of iNaturalist. Past topics have included:

Cost to Participant
Expeditions are not public hikes - registration is required.

How will the findings be used?
Data is posted to the iNaturalist website, available to participants and scientists. It also contributes to the Bay Area BioAtlas species guide.

Vital Signs expeditions begin promptly at 10:00 am and end at 2:00 pm. Meet at the Dwight Center for Conservation Science.
