Welcome to our ongoing effort to catalog citizen science and other public participation in scientific research (PPSR) projects for UC California Naturalists and other citizen scientists. It's a great way to stay involved and keep developing your skills as a natural scientist!
A vast majority of the information in the database was gathered from project websites and may be out of date. We encourage you to contact projects directly to get involved and learn about most recent opportunities. Project Purpose (taken from project materials)
Record data that will help researchers advance our understanding of biodiversity and our planet. Ants are incredible, especially because they act as a special "keystone" species that can indicate just how healthy and diverse all the plants and animals are.

Participant Activities
Each time you find an ant in a new location, you'll use the Urban Ant Collector android app to:
- Photograph the ant
- Enter basic information on the ant's location
- Enter basic information about yourself, the collector
- Create a collection number for mailing a sample specimen to the California Academy of Sciences

Volunteers need to have an Android phone and will need to go to the Android Marketplace and search for and install the "ODK Collect" app.

Other Information
The Urban Ant Collector app is an Android app that allows you to collect and record data just like a professional scientist. It uses Open Data Kit, a free and open-source set of tools which help organizations author, field, and manage mobile data collection solutions.
