Welcome to our ongoing effort to catalog citizen science and other public participation in scientific research (PPSR) projects for UC California Naturalists and other citizen scientists.  We invite you to browse the listed projects or enter key words (like birds, youth, invasive, coast, Alameda, etc.) in the search box above to find projects in your area. It's a great way to stay involved and keep developing your skills as a natural scientist!

 Project Purpose (taken from project materials)
  • Develop critical thinking skills through scientific research and exploration within low income communities of color in the cities of Oakland, Richmond, Emeryville, and San Francisco, California.
  • Research and curriculum addresses environmental quality - soil, water and air - within the schools and communities where we work and gives young scientists access to information technologies to enhance data collection and understanding of the world around them.
 Participant Activities
Participant activities include:
  • After school program: a year long mini-course presented at elementary, middle school, high school and community center sites by community and UC Berkeley science instructors.
  • Summer enrichment activities such as: collective investigations of water quality of local estuaries and lakes; presentations by professionals of diverse ethnic backgrounds; and excursions to local firms whose focus is IT and/or environmental science related activities.
  • An externship/internship component which provides students with further opportunities to learn and apply scientific research methodologies and IT skills in professional settings.

 Volunteer Qualifications Primary participants are high school students in or near Oakland, Richmond and Berkeley, CA. Students interested in participating must fill out an online application:

 Volunteer Training As part of participation, The EBAYS program provides, "out-of-school yet well structured and academically rigorous activities that facilitate the development of important skills that will benefit them in the future. The program uses inquiry based, hands-on learning activities to increase students understanding of key IT, earth science, and physical science concepts. The program also includes an important community based air and water quality research component to provide the students with real world, project based scientific inquiry. In this context, the students can apply newly acquired conceptual understandings and skills. In this way the program activities help foster both increased understanding of important scientific concepts, as well as greater appreciation of how scientific research contributes to addressing issues relevant to students' lives."
