Partner/Instructor Workshop 2016: Pasadena
Dec 8-9, 2016
You are invited to participate in a workshop focused on how to create and teach the UC California Naturalist Program. The workshop is an introduction for organizations who have completed a partner interest form and have initiated plans together with the California Naturalist Program Team to offer the course to their community, volunteers, or staff. The workshop is one required step in the application process to partner with the program.
Workshop agenda will include:
- Instructor and participant expectations
- Course tools, structure, syllabi, and customization
- Financial information, marketing and promotion
- Program evaluation
- Experiential learning and citizen science
- Working with adult audiences
- Managing volunteers
- Facilitated discussions
Each participant will receive a complete training manual and teaching tools. Prior to the workshop, we recommend participants have seen the UC California Naturalist Handbook that serves as the textbook for the program. Lunch, beverages, and light snacks will be provided both days.
Training Team Includes: California Naturalist Program staff, with support from partner organization instructors. We thank our host and co-sponsor, Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation.
Day 1 will cover the above agenda items and Day 2 will include field Naturalist activities and breakout discussions. Day 1 is not optional. Day 2 is optional, but highly encouraged.
Cost: $80/both days, $65/Day 1 only. Price includes lunch and training manual.
FYI: Because we will provide in-depth training regarding the logistics and details of the program, participants must have attended the May 30, 2013 Outreach Webinar, or viewed the slides and listened to the audio (links on this page). We are in the process of updating this presentation to reflect the substantial growth of the program, but the basics are covered. These webinar materials provide a broad overview of the program and cover many frequently asked questions.
Workshop space is limited, so please send only core program staff. Organizations that are currently planning courses with the California Naturalist Program will be given priority for participation. We encourage organizations to contact us with any questions prior to enrolling in the workshop.
Travel and accommodations: If you will be flying to the Pasadena area, we recommend Burbank/Bob Hope Airport. While we are not making specific arrangements for overnight accommodations, if you do require a room, these hotels near Pasadena City College are also in close proximity to Eaton Canyon. https://www.tripadvisor.com/HotelsNear-g32859-d3473982-Pasadena_City_College_Flea_Market-Pasadena_California.html
