Instructor Workshop 2014
Registration is now closed for the April 2014 Instructor Workshop. We anticipate holding another workshop in late 2014/early 2015. Please contact us with any questions and find out more about the format in the example below.
2014 UC California Naturalist Program Instructor Workshop
April 29-30, 2014; at UC’s Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Parlier, CA
You are invited to participate in a workshop focused on how to create and teach the UC California Naturalist Program. These workshops are for organizations interested in partnering with University of California ANR to offer the California Naturalist Program to their community, volunteers, or staff. There is an application process to becoming a partner program, and attending the workshop is one step in the process, but does not guarantee that we will be able to partner with your organization. We assume workshop participants are aware of this UC program, have discussed the program internally among staff and leadership, and are interested in learning more about moving forward toward a partnership to offer the CA Naturalist course locally. Download the draft agenda here.
Workshop agenda will include:
- Instructor and participant expectations
- Course tools, structure, syllabi, and customization
- Financial information, marketing and promotion
- Program evaluation
- Experiential learning and citizen science
- Working with adult audiences
- Managing volunteers
- Facilitated discussions
Each participant will receive a complete training manual and teaching tools. Prior to the workshop, we recommend participants have seen the UC California Naturalist Handbook that serves as the textbook for the program. Lunch, beverages and snacks will be provided both days. Please bring your own water bottle.
Training Team Includes: California Naturalist Program Directors and staff and UC ANR colleagues
Day 1 will cover the above agenda items and Day 2 will include a field trip and Naturalist activities, plus discussions. Day 1 is not optional. Day 2 is optional, but encouraged.
Time: 10:00AM-5PM Day 1; 9:00AM-2PM Day 2 (Day 2 optional but encouraged)
Place: Day 1 at Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Parlier, CA (approximately 30 minutes from the Fresno Airport). Day 2 at Sierra Foothills Conservancy's McKenzie Preserve.
Cost: $80/both days; $65 Day 1 (includes lunch both days, training manual)
FYI: Because we will provide in-depth training regarding the logistics and details of the program, participants must have attended the May 30, 2013 Outreach Webinar, or viewed the slides and listened to the audio (links on this page). These webinar materials provide a broad overview of the program and cover many frequently asked questions. Workshop space is limited, so please send only core program staff.
Accommodations: Most of us will stay at the Edgewater Inn in Reedley. It is both economic (~$65, double occupancy) and conveniently located 30 minutes from the Fresno Airport, 5 minutes from the Kearney Agriculture and Extension Center (Day 1), and the carpool meeting spot for traveling together to the Sierra Foothills Conservancy's McKenzie Preserve (Day 2). If you are traveling alone and would like to share the expense of a room, we'd be happy to try to pair you with someone else in the workshop.
Alternatively, there is camping very close to the Edgewater Inn at Kelly’s Beach on the Kings River.
(Registration is now closed for the April 2014 Instructor Workshop, please contact us with any questions!)
Thanks to UC ANR staff, Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and Sierra Foothills Conservancy for co-hosting this workshop.
