Partner/Instructor Workshop 2019: Elkus Ranch

Instructor Workshop
November 13-14, 2019

Elkus Ranch, Half Moon Bay, CA

Agenda TBA

REGISTER

You're invited to participate in a workshop focused on how to create and teach the UC California Naturalist Program. The workshop is an introduction for organizations who have completed a partner interest form and have initiated plans together with the California Naturalist Program Team to offer the course to their community, volunteers, or staff. The workshop is one required step in the application process to partner with the program. It is also an opportunity for existing partners to have additional instructor team members trained in the program. We encourage ALL partners who have not attended an Instructor Workshop in the past three years to attend. Training team includes California Naturalist Program staff, with support from partner organizations. Space is limited and organizations that are currently planning courses with the California Naturalist Program will be given priority for participation. We encourage organizations to contact us with any questions prior to enrolling in the workshop.

November 13, Day 1 (10am-5pm) Day 1 will cover key program components to organizing and executing your California Naturalist course.

November 14, Day 2 (9am-4:15pm) Day 2 will include a UCANR Fire Education Workshop with CalNat and UCANR partners. The Fire Education Workshop is designed to enhance educator's content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and use of technology in the design and delivery of fire education programs in California.

Cost: $85 for both days. Day 1 is mandatory. Day 2 is optional, but highly encouraged. Both are included in the flat registration fee. Separate registration for the Day 2 workshop is not necessary.  Both include beverages, snacks, lunch both days, and training materials.

Workshop Prep: Each participant will receive the following training materials in advance of the workshop: the instructor training manual, select handouts and worksheets. Please prepare for the workshop by reviewing these materials in advance. They will be provided to participants within a week of registering. View the agenda for a complete list of prep “homework assignments” (under the materials header). This will help facilitate the discussions.

Please download the provided materials on your laptop in advance. We will reference them during the training. Please note we are transitioning away from physical copies of the manual as the manual is updated frequently, and to save on paper resources. Please let us know if you would prefer a printed copy.

Additionally, we recommend participants become familiar with the UC California Naturalist website and the UC California Naturalist Handbook that serves as the textbook for the program. The Handbook is not included in the workshop cost. Click here for 30% off.

Location (Day 1&2): We thank our host, UCANR's Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay for a beautiful meeting spot. Directions here.

Meals: Lunch, beverages, and light snacks will be provided both days. Dinners are on your own, though the group may choose to dine together on Day 1.

Travel: If you will be flying into the area, we recommend San Jose International Airport. It is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive from the venue.
