Formerly known as the Acterra Stewardship Program, Grassroots Ecology was established on July 1, 2016. For over 30 years, we have served the community with high quality volunteer-based environmental stewardship programs. We are passionate about our mission of involving, educating, and inspiring the public to create healthy ecosystems in our urban communities, natural lands, and waters.
Our team engages 10,000 people annually in hands-on restoration, citizen science, and educational programs in the Silicon Valley region. We are grassroots by name and grassroots by philosophy. It is by working and learning together that we, as a community, have the power to reinvigorate our local part of the planet.
Grassroots Ecology is offering the UC California Naturalist Program for the second time in spring 2017. The UC California Naturalist Program promotes environmental literacy and stewardship through discovery and action. Classes will meet in Palo Alto at the Peninsula Conservation Center and in Cupertino at the McClellan Ranch Preserve on Monday nights from 2/6/16 to 4/10/17, with weekend field trips throughout the program. Field trips will be at various locations throughout the South Bay. This 40-hour course combines classroom and field experience in science, problem-solving, communication training and community service to explore the unique ecology and natural history of the bay area.
In addition to the coursework, California Naturalists will be encouraged to complete 40 hours of volunteer service in one of four areas: program support, interpretation/education, restoration/conservation and/or citizen science. Upon completing certification requirements, participants are eligible for four academic credits through UC Davis Extension for an additional nominal fee.
